Today, the Louisville Youth Orchestra (LYO) proudly announced the appointment of two artistic staff members charged with team leadership of Philharmonic Orchestra.
Carl Kling will step into a new role as Staff Conductor for Philharmonic Orchestra after having conducted and worked with LYO’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Winds over the past two seasons.
Caroline Joyner will join LYO as Philharmonic’s first-ever Resident String Mentor. Caroline Joyner is a Louisville Orchestra violinist and educator who maintains a robust teaching studio working with beginners through pre-collegiate strings.
Philharmonic is LYO’s intermediate full orchestra offering young string, woodwind, brass, and percussion artists their first opportunity to play alongside one another in a symphonic setting. The majority of Young Artists placed in Philharmonic Orchestra are in grades 8 through 10, a critical moment in a young person’s artistic, mental, and emotional development.
This focused team approach will enhance our Young Artists’ experience by providing a rigorous experience for woodwind, brass, and percussion artists, all while fully supporting the technical development of our young string players. Philharmonic artists will benefit from Carl and Caroline’s expertise through regular and dedicated coaching and sectional breakout opportunities.
LYO Music Director, Maestro Gabriel Lefkowitz, writes:
“In working with Carl this past year, a few things became abundantly clear: he is an excellent conductor, he goes above and beyond for his students, and our young artists love working with him. It’s been a pleasure to witness his wonderful ability to impart exceptional values, knowledge, skills, understanding, and joy to his students, and as I became aware of his career history working with full orchestras at the university level and had a chance to discuss our shared visions for the future of Philharmonic Orchestra, it became apparent that Carl was an ideal choice to take over as conductor of this ensemble.
Caroline, who is new to the LYO but familiar to many young string musicians in our region, embodies a truly exciting combination of skills and qualities for this role. In addition to being a professional violinist and committed private lesson instructor and chamber coach, she draws on a wealth of string pedagogy experience and is exactly the type of person whose very presence in the room will inspire the young musicians around her!
Please join us in welcoming Carl and Caroline into their new roles. It’s going to be a tremendously exciting year at Philharmonic Orchestra and the LYO as a whole!”
